History of the Firm

The firm was founded in 1921 by Ernest Rose Holden Gates who had previously been in practice in Hornchurch with John Read. Shortly thereafter he was joined by his son, Ernest Bridger Gates, a tall man known affectionately as 'Tiny' Gates. They practised as Gates & Son from premises at 40 Station Road, Upminster.

During the 1930s, Mr Gates Snr and Mr Gates Jnr retired from the practice and a limited partnership was formed, known as Gates & Son Ltd. The directors were David Williams, Hubert Cardnell, Robert Langdon and Albert Parish, the father of our Principal, David Parish

Robert Langdon was killed in action during the war and following the retirement of Williams and Cardnell, the practice became known as Gates, Parish & Co in 1946. The firm moved to 32 Station Road, where they have remained ever since.

Albert Parish was joined by his brothers John and Leonard Parish, and by two Chartered Surveyors, Gerard Williams and Leonard Collett.

In 1968, David Parish joined the firm and he succeeded his father as sole Principal in 1975.

Albert Parish continued as a Consultant up to his death in 1996, thereby ending a 66 year association with the firm.

Gates, Parish & Co continues to operate as a successful business in the heart of Upminster town centre, with Principal David Parish and current sales and letting staff Stuart, Paul & Nicola providing a first rate property service to the community.
